Everything You Need to Know About the European Championship

In 1927, Henri Delaunay, secretary-general of the French Football Federation, was the first to suggest the concept of a European competition. The event, however, did not take place until 1958, a full three years after Delaunay passed away. France hosted the inaugural competition in 1960. In the first-ever tournament, the Soviet Union defeated Yugoslavia, and only four teams qualified to compete. Eight teams were added to the tournament later in 1980, and sixteen teams were added in 1996. To increase the number of qualifying spots for smaller nations, UEFA authorised a plan to increase the number of teams competing in the championship to 24 in 2008.

Qualifying is required for participation in the championship for all UEFA member nations, with the exception of the host. Fifteen nations have claimed the title on more than one occasion. At three apiece, Germany and Spain are at the top of the list, followed by France with two, the Soviet Union with one, Italy with two, the Netherlands with one, Greece with one, Denmark with one, and Portugal with one.

C3

What Is the Format of the Euros?

In the years leading up to the UEFA European Championship, teams begin the qualification process. The team that hosts the tournament has an automatic berth, while all other teams will play each other in their respective groups to determine which advance in the Euro 2024 standings.

The qualification stage can change from one tournament to the next. In the past, only the top two teams from each group have been guaranteed a spot in the Euros, with the remaining spots determined by a system of play-offs based on each team’s UEFA Nations League rankings.

Each pot will send one team to each of the six groups of four, for a total of twenty-four teams competing. The Euro 2024 standings table are:

  • Group A: Germany, Scotland, Hungary, Switzerland
  • Group B: Spain, Croatia, Italy, Albania
  • Group C: Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, England
  • Group D: Poland, Netherlands, Austria, France
  • Group E: Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine
  • Group F: Türkiye, Georgia, Portugal, Czechia

There are two halves to the UEFA European Championship: the group stage and the knockout stage.

  • The group stages will begin on the 15th of June and end on the 27th of June. The knockouts are between the 29th of June and the 3rd of July.
  • The ones that survive this round enter the quarter finals, held on the 5th, 6th, and 7th of July.
  • The Semi-Finals are held on the 10th and 11th of July;
  • And eventually, the finals of the 2024 Eurocup will be held on the 15th of July.

The winner advances to the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions, where they will face the Copa América champion the following year.
