Both teams to score

An FA Cup tie between two sides that cannot stop drawing with each other. Selangor and Sabah FA met only last Tuesday in the Liga Super, and the 2-2 in Kota Kinabalu was the fifth draw in their last six meetings. Both teams have scored in five of those six games and the average is exactly three goals a match. That is the whole case in one paragraph; the rest is why I trust it in a cup game.

The tie

Wednesday 9 September, 21:00 Malaysian time, MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya. The FA Cup comes a week into the new season, which means the cup draw has handed both clubs a rematch of a league game they have barely digested. Eighteen goals in six games, both teams on the scoresheet in five of them, and the only clean sheet is a goalless February game played on a heavy pitch in the first week of the 2025 season. The last four meetings alone produced 4, 6, 4 and 2 goals. When two teams keep cancelling each other out on the scoreline, it is usually because both attacks are better than both defences — and that is exactly the profile here.

Form and team news

The new season is a week old, so there is little form to lean on. Each club has one league game played and one point from it, both from that same 2-2. The structural picture is clearer than the form table. Selangor at the MBPJ Stadium play open, front-foot football with full-backs pushed high, and they concede while they attack: they have not kept a clean sheet against Sabah since February 2025.
