What is FIFA World Cup?

The FIFA 2026 World Cup is a football tournament where nations from all around the world compete to become world champions. It is the most viewed sporting competition in the world. In 2026, it will be held for the 23rd time, and it will take place between the 11th of June and the 19th of July. The tournament has been held every four years since 1930. The only exceptions were 1942 and 1946, when it was cancelled due to the Second World War.

There are 206 teams that will attempt to qualify for the 45 spots available. They will join the three host teams who automatically qualify to make 48 teams. The teams are split into six different confederations based on their location. The qualification process started in September 2023, with the final qualification games not taking place till March 2026.

In 2026, the tournament will be hosted for the first time across three countries: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Games will take place in 16 different stadiums, the majority being in the United States. Also, for the first time, the tournament will be contested by 48 countries, which is an increase from the previous 7 tournaments, which involved 32 teams.

The first World Cup was held in 1930, and it was both hosted and won by Uruguay. They defeated Argentina 4-2 in front of a crowd of 68,346 people.

The most successful nation with five titles is Brazil, who won in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. They are also the only team to have played in every tournament. Only 8 nations have ever won the World Cup. Germany and Italy have won it four times, Argentina with three titles, Uruguay and France have two titles and England and Spain have won it once each.

The current defending champions are Argentina, who won the last World Cup in 2022, which was held in Qatar.

How We Rate World Cup Betting Sites?

This section will explain how our experts carefully evaluate the different betting sites. Looking at a number of factors which include their licensing information, how competitive their odds are, the variety of markets on matches, the range of payment methods available, bonuses for new and existing customers and customer support.

  • 1

    Licensing & Safety

The first thing to check with any website is to make sure they have a valid license, which means it's not only legal, but they must follow certain standards set by the gaming authority that has issued them a license. All sites on this list have such a license.

  • 2

    Odd Competitivness

Odds for the same game can vary from site to site. Often, sites have better odds on one sport but not necessarily on all sports. Multiple games have been compared at various sites to find those that, on average, offer the most competitive odds most often.

  • 3

    Market Variety

Your average customer these days doesn't just want to bet on which team is going to win a match. The best sites will offer a vast range of betting options, from popular markets like correct score or who will score the first goal, to more niche markets such as the number of corners in the match.

  • 4

    Payment Methods

Most sites will have the standard, more well-known payment methods, but not everyone uses them. Whether you prefer the more traditional methods like debit cards or bank transfer, or e-wallets, or one of the most recent methods, which is to use cryptocurrency, the general rule is the more methods available, the better.

  • 5

    Bonuses & Promotions

Practically every site will have a welcome bonus of some kind. The bigger sounding ones are not always the best; offers are investigated to see how they compare to each other. It’s not just the welcome offer that's important; the best sites will also have existing user promotions to keep their users engaged and not looking for offers elsewhere

  • 6

    Customer Support

Finally, the customer support options available at a website are considered. Of course, a customer hopes that they will never need to contact them, but it's important that if they ever do, the support will respond in a timely manner, the options offered are tested out to see how quick and knowledgeable the support is.

Betting on World Cup 2026 – Strategies & Tips

It's always worth spending some time investigating any bet to see if you agree with the bookmaker's favourite. There are several factors to consider and various strategies to follow that can help increase the likelihood of your bets being successful.

  • Analyse Team Form and Motivation
Checking a team's form is the first thing to consider when placing a bet. Looking for both good and bad form, like is the team on a winning or losing streak, if so, it’s likely to continue unless something has changed, for example, a key player coming back from suspension who may improve a team's fortune. Motivation is also something to take into account. A positive motivation example would be that every team has a rival, and when playing against them are likely to raise their game. Another example would be a team that's won its first two group games and qualified for the next round in its third game may rest players and not be fully focused on the game, as they have already qualified.
  • Study Tournament Trends
Looking back at previous tournaments can give an insight into what to expect in 2026. How has the team performed at recent tournaments? Check things like the results from the most recent Euros, Nations League, Copa America or the African Cup of Nations. Which teams are in form? Has the team qualified for the knockout stages of the previous 10 tournaments they have played? If so, chances are they should do it again.
  • Use Handicap Betting Strategies
Handicap betting is, of course, very popular in Malaysia. The trick is doing the research to find the right bet. There are various types of handicap markets, some more complicated than others, but they all give one team an advantage or disadvantage. The trick is to pick the team that can beat the handicap, doing research on teams' past results and checking for injuries or players being suspended or returning from a suspension can all make a difference. Does a team typically win a game by a large margin? If so, they should be able to overcome a small -1 goal disadvantage. But if their star striker is suspended, maybe not.
  • Bet on Players: Goalscorers and Bookings
There are a number of bets you can place within the game, such as First Goal Scorer or Anytime Goal Scorer. These often have good odds if you can pick a winner. Check to see which players' current form has been good, or whether they step up their game for the big tournaments, by reviewing their previous records. Another option is betting on the number of bookings in a game, checking the teams' records for cards received during recent games, and looking out for players who get a lot of yellow cards. Is the game between two long-term rivals and is likely to include some strong tackles!
  • Go Live: In-Play Betting
Live betting has never been more popular, and a lot of people now place bets in-play rather than pre-game. You can see how the game is developing, how well a team is performing and then place your bet. Most sites will also give you the option to cash out your bet before the game ends. If your bet is winning, you may wish to take a smaller profit while your team leads. rather than risking the bet losing because of a last-minute equaliser
  • Consider Penalty Shootout Bets
From the Round of 32 stage onwards, when a game ends in a draw, extra time will be played. If the game is still level after that, a penalty shoot-out will take place. When considering placing a bet, check a team's previous record in tournaments. This will give you a good clue about the pressure on them; some teams have a history of struggling in tournaments, and the pressure only increases. Also, check to see if the team has a goalkeeper who is an expert in saving penalties. Teams have been known to change goalkeepers seconds before the end of a match, as they are known for saving penalties
  • Manage Your Bankroll
Most importantly, keep track of what you're spending, and keep a record of wins and losses. Before placing any bet, assume it's going to lose. If you can’t afford to lose that money, do not place the bet!

World Cup 2026 Predictions

So, what are our predictions for the major prizes? Who will win overall, who will be the top scorer, and who will be the best goalkeeper and win the Golden Glove?

Overall Tournament Winner- 48 teams to choose from, but only 8 previous winners. Here's our Top 2 picks

  • Spain recently won the Euros in 2024 and is the tournament favourite, narrowly losing the Nations League on Penalties in 2025. We would be crazy not to consider them to become World Champions.

Golden Boot Winner - Here are our front-runners to be the top goal scorer.

  • Harry Kane. England's top ever goalscorer and currently playing for Bayern Munich. He's finished as their top scorer in the 23/24 and 24/25 seasons.
  • Kylian Mbappe. Winner of the award in Qatar 2022 and Top scorer in La Liga in 24/25.

Golden Glove Winner - Here is who we think will concede the fewest goals.

  • David Raya. Is the Spanish goalkeeper and is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment
  • Alisson Becker. The Brazilian goalkeeper, who currently plays for Liverpool, is also considered one of the best in the world and has been the Brazilian No. 1 goalkeeper since 2015
